Feynman Lectures on Physics (available from Caltech website for reading online)Top
There will be weekly homework assignments posted on the web (see course schedule). The homework is in many ways the most important element of the course, but is not graded. This means you must push yourself to do the homework on a regular basis (it's much more helpful if you are doing the problems on the same topic as the lectures that week). "Study halls" and study groups will be arranged to help you do the problems, but relying on others to think for you will be catastrophic at test time.
In most of the classes (randomly chosen), the instructor will give clicker quizzes using the HITT system. Each quiz will receive 3 points for correct answer, 1 point for incorrect answer, 0 point for no answer. Lowest 4 quiz grades will be dropped. This is the only accommodation for missed quizzes for any reason, including excused absences due to medical issues, sports commitments, etc.
There will be three in-class exams and a final exam. Exams will ask you conceptual questions as well as questions which require calculations at the level of assigned homework problem. Therefore, having worked and understood these problems should enable you to get an excellent grade! The final exam is comprehensive, but will emphasize problems from the last three weeks of the course. All exams will have multiple choice formats.
In-class hour exam 1: NPB 1001, Wednesday, Feb. 8
The lowest grade of the three in-class exams will be dropped.
You must bring writing instruments and a student registration
card with a photo for all tests and the final. All necessary paper will
be provided, and calculators will not be necessary. The exams will cover
material from the lectures and readings.
In-class hour exam 2: NPB 1001, Wednesday, Mar. 22
In-class hour exam 3: NPB 1001, Monday, Apr. 10
Final: NPB 1001, Thursday, April 27, 12:30pm - 2:30pm
Best two out of 3 hour exams: 2 x 24% = 48%, Final: 32%, HITT Quizzes 20%. Students are responsible for all announcements made in class.
There
will be no "extra credit"
under any circumstances unless specified explicitly in the assignment.
Letter grades will be
assigned using a strict uncurved distribution according to the numerical score
Grade A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- D+ D E
Total Score 100-91 90-85 84-80 79-73 72-65 64-58 57-50 49-45 44-40 39-35 34-0
Makeup/late policy:
There will be no make-up exams. The policy of allowing you to drop one exam score should allow you to account for any
in-term illnesses. Students who miss two in-term exams must present medical or equivalent excuses, and then may petition
for an incomplete grade in the course.
Final exam conflicts with other exams will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
You are responsible for
all material covered in the textbook and in class, including any
announcements made or special handouts distributed in class. If you must be absent during a given
lab or lecture, check with a friend to make sure you know what was covered.
