Special Notes about the Syllabus:  Please note that the projected dates for exams and chapter starts are TENTATIVE.  The schedule will be finalized during the course and will be announced in class.



Week 01:   
    Aug. 23,25      Class Starts.  Introduction of Course.  Ch. 3.
                   Extra-credit #1 (5 points): One double-spaced, typewritten page describing why you are taking this
                    course.  Describe how you think this course will benefit you in your pursuit of your degree. List math
                    classes you had  (Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus,  Calculus, etc.) and indicate your own
                    assessment from 1 to 5 of your understanding (5 highest).
                    Due at the start of class on Wed., Sept. 1.  No late papers accepted.


    Aug. 27    Ch. 3.
                    Demo: Feather and Penny.

Week 02:
    Aug. 30    Ch. 3 and 4.
                    
H-ITT remote test "TEST 1" (points not retained)
                    Demo: Car on Track, velocity and acceleration.

    Sept. 1    Extra-credit #1 due at the START of class.  Ch. 4 and 5.
                    
H-ITT Remote Test “TEST 2” (points not retained).
                    Demo: 1,4,9,… Drop.  1D Toss/Drop.

    Sept 3    Ch. 5.  Finish 1D Toss/Drop.  2D Projectile.
                    Demo:  Monkey catches ball.  Demo:  Ball launch on cart.
                    
H-ITT System for points begins.

Week 03:   
    Sept. 8    Projectile Motion, Continued (Ch. 5). 

    Sept. 10   
Newton's Laws (Review, Ch. 4-5) and Equilibrium.  Work and Energy (Ch. 7).
                      Distribute copy of Official Note Sheet for MTE1.

Week 04:
    Sept. 13   Finish Work and Energy (Ch. 7).  Work Problems of 2D Forces.
 
    Sept. 15   Finish 2D Problems.  Answer Questions about problems for the Mid-term Exam.
                    Mid-term Exam 1:  Wednesday, Sept. 15, 6:15pm - 8:05pm,  in NEB 202.
                        Mid-term Exam will cover material from class and Chapters 3, 4, 5, 7.


    Sept. 17   In-class review for Mid-Term Exam 1 result, work on problems/questions from the students.

                   

Week 05:
    Sept. 20   
Start Ch. 8, Impulse and Momentum.  

    Sept 22    Conservation of Linear Momentum (continued, Ch. 8).  1D collisions.
                        Firecracker soda cans and air track collisions.

    Sept 24    Conservation of Linear Momentum (finish, Ch. 8).  Ballistic Pendulum and 2D collisions.

Week 06:
    Sept. 27    Rotational Motion (Start Ch. 6)
                    

    Sept. 29   Rotational Motion (Ch. 6) and Rotational Momentum (Ch. 9)

    Oct. 1       Fun with rotations.


Week 07:

    Oct. 4      Finish Rotational Topics (Ch. 6 and 9) and Start Bodies in Equilibrium (Ch. 10)
 
    Oct. 6      Finish Ch. 10, Bed of Nails (Theory and Experiment)

    Oct. 8      
Ch. 11 (Sections 3 and 4) and Ch. 12.  Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Hydrostatics/Hydrodynamics.


Week 08:
    Oct. 11    Ch. 12 continued.  Distribute Formula Sheets for MTE2. 
                    Announce "On Aluminum Boats!" Extra Credit (5 pts) due Monday, OCT. 18, start of class.  sample


    Oct. 13    
Ch. 12 and 13.

    Oct. 15     Homecoming, No Class

Week 09:
    Oct. 18     "On Aluminum Boats!" Extra Credit due at start of class.  Review for MTE2.
 
    Oct. 20    In-class review for Mid-Term Exam 2.  Answer YOUR questions.

                  
Mid-term Exam 2:  Wednesday, October 20, 6:15pm - 8:05pm,  in NPB 1002.
                        Material from MTE1 to end of Ch. 13 and lecture material.
                         (Chapters 8, 6, 9, 10, 11 (Sections 3-4), 12, 13).

    Oct. 22    No Class, Reading Day.

Week 10:
    Oct. 25   Continue Ch. 14 & 15. 

    Oct. 27    Finish 14 & 15 and related material.

    Oct. 29    Start Ch. 16.

Week 11:
    Nov. 1    Ch. 16 and Ch. 17
    Nov. 3    Ch. 18
    Nov. 5    Ch. 18.

Week 12:
    Nov. 8     Finish Ch. 18 and Start Ch. 19.
    Nov. 10   Ch. 19.

    Nov. 12   Ch. 19 and Start preparation for mid-term exam.

Week 13:
    Nov. 15   Putting it all together for mid-term exam.
    Nov. 17   In-class review for Mid-Term Exam 3 (MTE3).  Answer YOUR questions.
                
 Mid-term Exam 3:   Wednesday, November 17, 6:15pm - 8:05pm,  in NPB 1002.
                      Material from Mid-term Exam 2 up to material on Nov.17, including Ch. 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19.
