This is a first course in solid state physics at the graduate level. The standard textbook by Ashcroft and Mermin will be covered through semiconductors (Chapter 29), including such topics as crystal structure, free electron models, band theory, semiclassical electron transport, and lattice vibrations, Magnetism and superconductivity will be covered in Solid State 2. Graduate level courses in quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics are prerequisites. This course is an essential building block for anyone working in condensed matter physics, solid state chemistry, materials science, or electrical engineering.

Apply free electron models to single element materials and understand the shortcomings of these models.

Describe crystal structure in real space and in k-space. Predict X-ray diffraction patterns.

Calculate physical properties using semiclassical transport theory (Boltzman equation).

Calculate lattice properties using classical and quantum theories.

Apply band theory to tight binding models and weak periodic potentials. Use band theory to understand the differences between metals, semiconductors, and insulators.

Calculate transport properties of a semiconductors and semiconducting devices including pn-junctions and bipolar transistors.

**Homework (40%):**

Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis from the textbook for the course and other sources. Because the number of problems solvable analytically is limited, some problems will involve numerical solutions, most likely with Matlab, which I will introduce in class.**Exam 1 and 2 (30% each):**
