Homework Assignments

Homework assignements  will be posted here when they become available.

HW #1:  Chapter 2:   17, 20, 21, 23, 26, 31  (Quiz on 8/30)

HW #2:   Chapter 2:  45, 51, 54, 58, 61, 62, 64  (Quiz on  9/6)
You can also try to do the problem of time dilation where the clock is oriented parallel to the X- axis (rather than in the Y-axis direction where we did the initial calculation in class).

HW #3:
Chapter 2:  69, 70,  73,  76,  81, 83, 90,  109. (Quiz on 9/13).
For those who like to be a bit more challenged, try 112, 113 and also see if you can show, using the Lorentz transformation, that the invariant is the same in all frames, i.e.  prove eq. 2.36. (This is essentially problem 107).

HW #4: Chapter 3:  12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 21, 23, 25.

HW #5: Chapter 3:  29, 32, 36,  38,  40, 42, 47, 51, 52

HW # 6: Chapter 4:  15, 17,  18, 19, 22,  24,  25   Also :  read section 6.4 on Phase and Group Velocity.   Then do Chapter 6, problem 45.  You will be responsible for phase and group velocity on the first exam.

HW # 7: Chapter 4:  54, 57;  Chapter 5: (Skip the Harmonic Oscillator for now).   23, 24, 27, 30, 56,  78, 79, 80, 81.

HW #8:
Chapter 5:  49, 50, 53, 90,  Chapter 6: 18, 21,  22 and the attached problem.

Some of the solutions to the homework problems can be found in the back of the text book. Others can be found in the student solution manual.  Finally, many of the solutions can be found online.  Sites like cramster.com offer solutions for a variety of physics course.  If you can not find the solutions, please stop by my office and you can look at the solutions manual.
