Getting to Gainesville:

  • The city of Gainesville has its own airport (GNV) served by American Airlines, Delta, Silver, US Airways, and United.
  • If you are looking for more or cheaper flight solutions, several bigger airports can be reached by car in about 2 hours. These airports include Orlando (MCO), Tampa (TPA), and Jacksonville (JAX).

To/from Gainesville airport:

  • Taxi cab: several taxicab companies operate at the Gainesville Airport. Reservations are not required, but you can find a complete list with phone numbers here. The trip from the Airport to the downtown should be between $25 and $35.
  • Bus: public buses run from/to the airport between 7:45 to 18:35 Mon-Sat, and from 9:55 to 17:30 on Sunday. Depending on where you stay, you will have to change bus (specifics also depends on the day and time of your arrival). Please refer to the Regional Transporation System website (http://go-rts.com/), which has a functional trip planner on the home page (use "airport" as departure/arrival); the trip planner is powered by Google Maps, and you can obtain the same results by using Google Maps directly (that may be easier if you don't know the name of places in your trip).
  • Rental car: several rental car companies operate at the Gainesville Regional Airport. Driving from the airport to downtown takes about 15 minutes.

Getting to the Physics department:

  • Walk: from the Holiday Inn you can get to the Physics department in about 25 minutes by walking completely in campus. If it's not raining, February is a good month to walk in Florida!
  • Bus: there are many bus routes that stop at or close to the physics building. For details, please refer to the Regional Transporation System website (http://go-rts.com/), which has a functional trip planner on the home page (use "physics building as "arrival"); the trip planner is powered by google maps, and you can obtain the same results by using google maps directly (that may be easier if you don't know the name of places in your trip). RTS also has a real time bus tracking system at http://ufl.transloc.com/. NOTE: if you are planning to use the bus at least twice in a day, ask the bus driver for a daily pass, which costs $3 and gives you unlimited rides at the cost of 2 one-way rides (2x$1.5).
  • Car: while getting to the physics department is relatively easy by car, parking can be more problematic. On Friday, the pay parking garage at the Reitz Union is the only available parking facility nearby. On Saturday, instead, the big "Commuter Lot" parking on Gale Lemerand Drive, across the street from the physics building is available and free. Refer to the map at the beginning of the page and to http://www.parking.ufl.edu/pages/ufvisitorpark.asp for direction and parking locations.
