Guenakh Fest

Distinguished Professor Guenakh Mitselmakher has had an enormous positive impact on the visibility and scientific reputation of the Department of Physics and the University of Florida. His vision led UF to play significant roles in the two most important discoveries in fundamental physics in the last decade, the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, and the detection by the LIGO collaboration of gravitational waves emitted by merging black holes. Thanks to Gena’s initiative and tireless efforts, UF has one of the largest university-based contingent working on CMS, one of the two detectors that discovered the long-sought Higgs boson which completes the Standard Model of elementary particles. Also thanks to Gena, UF joined the LIGO gravitational wave project at an early stage and played a major role in both the experimental hardware and the data analysis that made possible the first detection of gravitational waves from merging black holes - an achievement recognized by the award of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics to Rainier Weiss, Barry Barish, and Kip Thorne.
