International Summer Research Program in Gravitational-Wave Physics:
Research Experiences for Undergraduates around the world

INFN and Dipartimento di Fisica - Università di Perugia
  • Monolithic test mass suspensions and the thermal noise limit to the sensitivity of advanced GW detectors:
In this project we plan to address the theoretical/experimental study of the thermal noise limit represented by the residual motion of the test masses in advanced gravitational wave detectors. The so-called monolithic suspension solution is studied with specific reference to the dissipative properties of the materials involved and on the geometry of the suspension itself. Part of the study will be held in the Virgo-Perugia INFN laboratory, at the Physics Department of the University of Perugia and, possibly, part of it in the EGO facility in Cascina (PI).
