2019 Slater Lectures – James Freericks (Georgetown University)

Date October 23, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

What is quantum computing and how does it relate to quantum biology?

This talk will assume no prior knowledge of quantum mechanics or quantum biology. In the first half of the talk, I will present a flash introduction to quantum computing based on describing quantum mechanics in terms of probabilities. Then I will describe the current status of quantum hardware and the types of calculations so-called noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers can perform. The focus will be on the variational quantum eigensolver for large molecules. I will end with a more speculative discussion of what defines the field of quantum biology and what are the grand challenge problems that quantum computers may ultimately solve.
