Program Schedule

Sat May 25 noon Earliest check-in time at the Keys Residential Complex (formerly known as the Apartment Residence Facility). Upon check-in, pick up a Physics REU packet containing a welcome letter, campus map, etc.

WEEK 1
Tue May 28   First day of REU program.
    9:30 am Campus tour for non-UF participants. Meet at main desk of the Keys Residential Complex.
    noon Orientation meeting for all REU participants (2205 NPB).
    12:15 pm Welcome lunch in Physics for participants, faculty mentors, and departmental representatives (2205 NPB).
Wed May 29 1:00 pm Laboratory safety workshop presented by Mark Yanchisin, UF Environmental Health and Safety (2205 NPB). All REU participants must attend!
Fri May 31 3 pm Computer orientation: Using the Department's UNIX System, presented by UF Physics staff (1212 NPB).
Sat Jun 1 11 am Picnic at Lake Wauburg for participants in the Chemistry and Physics REUs. Meet in the parking lot north of the Keys Complex at 10:45 am.

WEEK 2
Fri Jun 7 3 pm Seminar: Getting into Graduate School, Prof. Alan Dorsey, UF Physics (2165 NPB).

WEEK 3
Fri Jun 14 3 pm Seminar/lab tours: Profs. David Reitze and Stephen Hagen, UF Physics, will talk about their research and lead a tour of their labs. (Meet in 2165 NPB.)

WEEK 4
Fri Jun 21 all day Field trip to the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee. Meet in the parking lot north of the Keys Complex at 7:30 am. (See email for details.)
Sat Jun 22 all day Field trip to the NASA Kennedy Space Center. Meet in the parking lot at the southeast corner of the Keys Complex at 8:00 am. Details tcan be found here.

WEEK 5
Fri Jun 28 3 pm Seminar/lab tour: Low-temperature physics: What's cold and what's hot. Prof. Mark Meisel, UF Physics, will provide an introduction to the goals and methods of low-temperature physics, then lead a short tour of the UF Microkelvin Laboratory. (Meet in 2165 NPB.)

WEEK 6
Thu Jul 4 Independence Day (University closed)
Fri Jul 5 No REU activities planned

WEEK 7
Fri Jul 12 3 pm Weekly Meeting: Scientific Ethics. A discussion of ethical issues connected with scientific research, led by Alan Dorsey and others.

WEEK 8
Mon Jul 15 noon Lunch with visitors from the REU site at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee (2205 NPB).
Tue Jul 16 10 am Communications workshop: First 2-hour session on scientific writing skills presented by Dr. Dianne Cothran, UF Center for Written and Oral Communication (2165 NPB).

Important: Bring to this session a description (three or four well-organized paragraphs) of the purpose, plan, and scope of your REU research project. This description, which may eventually form the introduction to your end-of-project report, should be accessible to your non-expert peers. It should be prepared with a word processor (use whatever system you'll employ for preparing your final report) and printed double-spaced. Use of literature citations is optional.

Mon Jul 22 1 pm Communications workshop: First 2-hour session on oral communication skills presented by Dr. Kim McCall, UF Center for Written and Oral Communication (2165 NPB).
Tue Jul 23 10 am Communications workshop: Second 2-hour session on scientific writing skills presented by Dr. Dianne Cothran (2165 NPB).
Fri Jul 26 4 pm Deadline for submitting first version of end-of-project report to Kevin Ingersent (2162 NPB).
Fri Jul 26 No weekly meeting

WEEK 10
Mon Jul 29 1 pm Communications workshop: Second 2-hour session on oral communication skills presented by Dr. Kim McCall, UF Center for Written and Oral Communication (2165 NPB).

During this session, you will be expected to deliver the introduction to you final presentation. More detailed instructions will be provided during the July 22 session.

Wed Jul 31 1 pm Deadline for submitting final version of end-of-project report to Kevin Ingersent (2162 NPB).
1-4 pm Student presentations.
Thu Aug 1 1-4 pm Student presentations (continued).
Fri Aug 2   Last day of REU program.
    9 am to
noon
Exit interviews.
    noon Closing lunch in Physics Department
Sat Aug 3 noon Latest check-out time at the Keys Residential Complex.
