Summer 1999 Research Program:
Research Experiences for Undergraduates/
Research Experiences for Teachers

The Department of Physics at the University of Florida offers a 10-week summer research program supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Undergraduate participants receive a stipend, a travel allowance, and prepaid housing on campus.
The 1999 Summer program ran from June 1 to August 6, inclusive. The program was centered around a research project, carried out within an active research group on campus. Other activities included seminars on cutting-edge areas of physics; workshops focusing on graduate programs, career opportunities in the physical sciences, and scientific communications skills; and field trips to industrial laboratories.
Associated with the REU program was an eight-week Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program, also sponsored by the NSF. Five middle- and high-school teachers carried out research projects in the Physics Department, developing teaching products to carry back into the classroom, and interacting with the REU participants.
